Merle H. Hucke, 77, of rural Mound Valley died at 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005, at Galichia Heart Hospital in Wichita. He had been in his usual health and his death was unexpected.
He was born Dec. 11, 1927, in rural Mound Valley to Cecil O. and Eva M. (Birt) Hucke. He grew up in the Pleasant Hill community and attended Pleasant Hill Church. He graduated from Labette County Community High School in 1945. Shortly after high school, he was drafted into the Army. In 1947, he returned to Mound Valley and worked at Farmland Industries oil refinery in Coffeyville. He worked there for 37 years until retiring in 1985. He also farmed and raised livestock throughout his adult life and continued to do so until he died.
He was an active member of Mound Valley United Methodist Church for 43 years. He enjoyed playing his fiddle and guitar. He was a charter member of Mound Valley Old Time Fiddlers, Pickers and Singers. He was also a member of the National Farmers Organization.
He married Luvonne L. Wiley on Nov. 7, 1952, in Chetopa. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include two sons, Chris Hucke and his wife, Lita, of Parsons and R. Kelly Hucke of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two daughters, Brenda McMahon and her husband, Paul, of St. Charles, Ill., and Teresa Wille and her husband, Brad, of Manhattan; three grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; a brother, Richard Hucke and his wife, Carol, of rural Parsons; and two sisters, Betty Tanner of rural Parsons and Jenae Utley and her husband, Alan, of Checotah, Okla.
The service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Mound Valley United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tom Reazin officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Altamont.
