  [S22] Obituary - Various. J. Auwärter Word has been received of the death Thanksgiving Day of John Auwärter, a former resident of Pacific Grove for many years. Mr Auwärter died at the Carmichael home of his son, August, which he had shared for the past 3 months. He was 97, a native of Germany, and came to the US as a lad of 15. He farmed west of Woodland until 1887, when he established a cattle ranch at Michigan Bar. In 1917, with his wife, Sophie, he moved to Grove Acres avenue in Pacific Grove, serving from then until 1944 as sexton of El Carmelo Cemetery in Pacific Grove. Mrs. Auwärter died in 1933. In addition to his son, survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Elsa Dildine of Oakland; seven grandchildren;16 great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren. A daughter, Martha, died in 1913.
