Founder of the Illinois Association for Adult Development and ageing. Past President of the Illinois Guidance and Personnel Association. He was a pioneer in the profession of counseling in Illinois. Elaine Margaret Gorman Rosso, a long-time Effingham County resident, died Sunday, August 26, 2012, at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham. She was 94 years old.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, August 30, 2012, at Sacred Heart Church, Effingham. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Effingham. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, August 29, 2012, at Johnson Funeral Home, Effingham.
A Chicago native, Elaine was born on February 22, 1918, the daughter of William Gorman and Josephine Burke Gorman. She graduated from Providence High School in Chicago in 1936 and was awarded a scholarship to Ford Business College. Upon graduation from business college, she worked in the accounting department of Illinois Bell Telephone company until 1946.
She married William H. Rosso in Chicago on March 1, 1946. After their marriage, Bill and Elaine lived in Urbana, where she worked as an assistant account clerk at the University of Illinois Library. They also lived in Brussels, Tuscola, Hume, and Altamont, Illinois. They moved to Effingham in 1958.
After raising their three children, Elaine returned to school, first taking classes at Lake Land College, then transferring to St. Mary of the Woods College in Indiana in the Woods External Degree program, from which she was graduated in 1977. She received her Illinois State Teacher’s Certificate, for kindergarten through grade 9, in 1977.
While attending college classes, Elaine worked as a teacher’s aide at East Side School. After she received her degree, she taught fifth grade at Sacred Heart School for several years until her retirement in June 1982. In her later years, she tutored Spanish-speaking and other students in spoken and written English.
Rosso and her husband were active in Sacred Heart Parish since moving to Effingham. They participated in the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine and assisted in educational programs for high school students at Sacred Heart Parish. Elaine was a member of the Altar Society and the Catholic Daughters of America.
Elaine served as president of the Effingham Women’s Club. She was also a member of the Women’s Club in Altamont, Homemakers’ Extension, and a Ladies Lunch group. She enjoyed reading, and she wrote entertaining poems for family birthdays and anniversaries.
She is survived by her husband William H. Rosso of Effingham, three children and their spouses, Margaret (Peggy) Grossman and Michael Grossman of Urbana, William H. Rosso, Jr. and Susan Drake Rosso of Gurnee, and Patricia Rosso and Robert Smilowitz of Brooklyn, New York. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Aaron Grossman, Daniel Grossman, Nathaniel Smilowitz, Michael Smilowitz, Matthew Rosso, and Jessie Rosso. Also surviving are two nieces and a nephew, Elaine Bates Kies, Cheryl Gorman Sublette, and Brian Gorman. She was preceded in death by her parents and by a sister, Deloris Gorman Bates and a brother, William Gorman.
